Athena. I was really happy to this commission, I got a chance to do this for a 10yr old girl who loves Greek Mythology (so cool!) Plus I got to add in a barred owl, my favorite.
When I was a younger lass, I loved Athena. I had to take a class in my 4th year on Greek and Roman mythology, but she was always my favorite. I thought she stood for power and intelligence (things not normally associated with women in these days). So, of course, I had to critique this. But I ramble. As far as this great piece goes, it immediately caught my attention because the style is very unique. The shading is not definite, in her dress, but it looks gorgeous. A wonderful execution that anyone would enjoy, mythology fan or not. The technique is just absolutely amazing! The lines are in place, just maybe not where someone would expect them to be. Keep up the wonderful work!
I like this image and I'd like to attempt a critique for you.
First the owl (Archimedes?) I like the way the owl is semi transparent on the bottom wing, it merges quite well, the problem comes in the top wing where the splayed feathers don't look right as the transparency. I suspect adding some colour to the feather or some more lines to bolster their shapes. The rest of the owl is perfect.
I love the angry face on Athena, perfectly emotive and I love it's shape and size. good ears, good nose, nice eyes. The clothes are good too, I understand the clothes need to look godly and ethereal and the transparencies and white lines do a good job of showing that.
With the semi transparency though she needs more attention paid to her body shape. Things like the breasts and backside look a bit too flat and it could be the lack of colour or it could be the shape as it interacts with the semi transparent clothes.
The hands are too big and puffy, as if she is allergic to her shield. It might be that you need to add some more definition. Or it might just need less definition, I'm not one to really handle hands; but she should probably be clasping that shield too. On the other hand the foot and toes with the shoe are perfect, beautiful.
This is wonderful!!!! You've done this beautifully and shed a whole new light on Athena for me!!!! Thank you so much!!! I encourage you to keep this up. I'd love to see more of your work
